Ayana Mathis:
“I’m going to read a chapter from a novel in progress. The main characters are a nine-year-old girl named Sala and Cassie, her mother. Sala and Cassie live with Cassie’s parents, Hattie and Fred. Cassie is in the midst of a mental breakdown that has severely compromised her ability to function normally within the family unit. At this point in the novel Cassie’s illness has reached a crisis point and her parents have decided to take her to see a psychiatrist. This chapter is written as a kind of monologue from her perspective and takes place on the day of her scheduled appointment.”
